Arsenal have received a fresh update on their pursuit of Julian Alvarez, as Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has emphatically stated where the striker will play next season. Barcelona, who have made Alvarez their top summer target, are facing a firm response from the LaLiga champions.
Cerezo's Defiant Message to Barcelona
Speaking after Barcelona president Joan Laporta revealed a "very significant offer" for Alvarez, Cerezo made it clear that Atletico have no intention of selling to their direct rivals. "Joan Laporta is a good friend, he's a great president, and he knows very well, as do all of you, where Julian Alvarez will be playing next year," Cerezo said, according to reports.
Barcelona have been told they must trigger the €500million (£431m) release clause in Alvarez's contract to secure his signature. This ultimatum follows Real Madrid's rejected €150m (£129m) bid earlier in June.
Laporta's Ultimatum and Alternatives
Laporta confirmed Barcelona's offer but warned that patience is wearing thin. "We have made a very significant offer; if they are willing to accept it, fantastic, but it won't be unlimited. We have to make a decision. Whether we maintain the offer or not depends on how these last two weeks of July unfold," Laporta told SER.
He added that sporting director Deco is working on alternatives, including the imminent signing of Adeyemi. "Obviously, if the Julian deal falls through, we have alternatives," Laporta stated.
Arsenal's Lingering Interest
Arsenal have been monitoring Alvarez for over a year, with manager Mikel Arteta reportedly considering a move if Barcelona fail. The 24-year-old World Cup winner has expressed his desire to leave Atletico, telling ESPN last month: "I think the best thing for everyone is a transfer. I want to fulfil my dream."
However, with Atletico digging in their heels and Barcelona facing a tight deadline, Arsenal may be handed an unexpected opportunity to sign the Argentine striker.
