England's Disciplinary Status Ahead of Semi-Final
England have walked a tightrope in terms of trying to avoid suspensions through too many yellow cards at the World Cup up to now. As the Three Lions head into the semi-final against Argentina, they have a clean slate, with no England players currently one booking away from a ban. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly were all at risk of missing out on the semis had they been carded against Norway, but each managed to avoid a booking.
FIFA's Tournament Booking Rules
Under FIFA rules, players incur a one-match suspension if they accumulate two yellow cards in separate games during the competition. Crucially, these card tallies are wiped clean at certain points in the tournament. Because existing yellow cards were wiped following the quarter-finals, no squad member can be ruled out of the World Cup final simply by receiving a yellow card in the semi-final. Only a red card in the penultimate round would result in missing the final with suspension.
Confirmed Semi-Final Absentee
Jarell Quansah is the only England player ruled out of the clash with Argentina. The Bayer Leverkusen centre-back received his marching orders with a straight red card following a robust tackle on Mexico's Jesus Gallardo in the last-16. While a straight red usually triggers a single-game suspension, FIFA's disciplinary panel increased the 23-year-old's punishment to a two-match ban, categorising the incident as serious foul play. Consequently, the defender sat out the Norway fixture and must miss the semi-final, though he will be eligible for selection in the final if England qualify.
