Wayne Rooney has questioned some of Thomas Tuchel's selections for the England World Cup squad, particularly the decision to overlook Luke Shaw for injury cover. The former England striker described the move as "a bit strange" after Tuchel called up Chelsea's Trevoh Chalobah instead.
Rooney's Reaction to Shaw Snub
Speaking to the BBC, Rooney expressed surprise that Shaw was not chosen to replace the injured Tino Livramento. "It's a bit strange. I would have liked to have seen Luke Shaw. And then Djed Spence maybe being cover for Reece James and Luke Shaw come in," he said.
Shaw has been a regular for England at previous major tournaments, starting and even scoring in finals. Despite his injury history, Rooney believes the left-back deserved consideration when fit.
Chalobah Called Up
Tuchel opted for Trevoh Chalobah, who made his only England appearance in a friendly against Senegal last year. The versatile Chelsea defender is not expected to feature in Wednesday's opener against Croatia.
Rooney acknowledged that Tuchel likely kept in touch with players who were available. "I'm sure Thomas Tuchel has kept contact with players to stay available and I'm sure he [Chalobah] was one of those who was available," he added.
Other Controversial Selections
Tuchel's squad choices have divided opinion. The German coach left out Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Real Madrid right-back known for his attacking prowess but criticized for defensive frailties. Harry Maguire also missed out, learning of his omission via a FaceTime call.
"It was quite an awkward call," Maguire admitted. "I received a text saying can I speak to you about 4pm. It is quite a unique way of doing it and it must be quite hard because he can see everyone's reactions. I said straightaway I was really disappointed."
Defensive Options
For the opening match, Tuchel must choose two from John Stones, Ezri Konsa, and Marc Guehi to start in central defence. Stones and Guehi have partnered effectively before, but Konsa has had a stellar season with Aston Villa.
On the flanks, Reece James is considered one of England's elite when fit, while Manchester City's Nico O'Reilly has emerged as a top left-back after a breakout campaign.
England begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday night.
