Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey was booed by England fans when his name was announced before Tuesday night's 0-0 World Cup draw between England and Ghana in Boston. Most England players shook his hand, but Tottenham Hotspur full-back Djed Spence notably refused.
Partey's Legal and Visa Ordeal
The former Arsenal midfielder is due to stand trial in the UK next year after pleading not guilty to seven charges of rape and one count of sexual assault between 2020 and 2022. Partey was denied entry to Canada for Ghana's Group L opener against Panama despite an appeal that led to a court hearing in Ottawa.
Speaking from Ghana's training base at Bryant University in Rhode Island, Partey described the visa issues as "part of football" and outside his control. He said he felt physically ready, was in good spirits, and that the team had prepared well.
Match Dynamics and Tactical Analysis
Partey played the full 90 minutes in his familiar defensive midfield role for Villarreal, anchoring Ghana's midfield to secure a crucial clean sheet. Despite England holding 80% possession and completing 347 passes to Ghana's 98 in the first half, they struggled to break through Ghana's deep defensive line and rigid low block.
Ghana's strategy involved staying compact and disrupting England's flow with physical, tough-tackling play. Key England players like Jude Bellingham, Declan Rice, Reece James, Harry Kane, and Elliot Anderson were repeatedly knocked to the ground, killing England's attacking momentum.
England lacked creativity, managing their first shot on target only in the 57th minute. Their best chance came late when a Matt O'Riley header struck the crossbar, leaving manager Thomas Tuchel with questions on how to break down defensively minded teams.
Bright Spots and Reactions
England midfielder Declan Rice praised Partey's footballing abilities in a pre-match press conference and hugged him after full-time. Among few positives for England were Noni Madueke, who provided spark with direct dribbling and crosses, and Djed Spence, who looked lively down the left and made a vital recovery run to bail out Anthony Gordon early in the second half.
