Josh Tongue Eyes Bowling Improvement Under Troy Cooley's Guidance
Tongue Aims to Elevate Game with Coach Troy Cooley

Josh Tongue Confident Troy Cooley Will Elevate His Bowling Prowess

England paceman Josh Tongue is optimistic that collaborating with the esteemed fast bowling coach Troy Cooley will significantly enhance his abilities on the cricket field. Tongue's impressive displays during the winter Ashes series in Australia have firmly positioned him as a likely automatic selection for England's upcoming summer fixtures.

Standout Winter Performance Secures Future Role

Despite England's disappointing 4-1 defeat in the Ashes, Tongue emerged as one of the few bright spots. Overlooked for the initial two Tests, he seized his opportunity in the final three matches, claiming an impressive 18 wickets. His combination of raw pace, fuller deliveries, and an awkward bowling angle proved highly effective, often disrupting the Australian batting lineup.

While acknowledging occasional inconsistencies, Tongue is focused on refining his game under Cooley's mentorship. Cooley, renowned for his role in England's 2005 Ashes victory and for developing Australia's formidable pace trio—Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, and Pat Cummins—recently joined as England's national pace bowling lead.

Building a Productive Partnership

Tongue expressed enthusiasm about their budding relationship, noting a recent phone conversation that highlighted Cooley's engaging approach. "He's coached the likes of Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and was part of India as well," Tongue remarked. "I had a little chat with him on the phone the other day. I feel like we're going to get on really well, and he's going to help me get even better than where I am now."

The interaction was marked by light-hearted humour, with Cooley joking about call charges, which helped break the ice. Tongue added, "There was a bit of humour in the phone call which was quite funny. His first line was 'I'm in Aussie, do you accept the rate?' And I was like 'yeah, I accept the rate.' Then we had a little chat about the winter and moving forward."

Focus on Nottinghamshire and Future Aspirations

Despite his elevated status, the 28-year-old remains grounded, concentrating on his early-season commitments with Nottinghamshire. At the club's media day, he emphasized a game-by-game mindset: "I just try and think game by game. I want to start well for Notts, which is going to put me in good stead for the rest of the season. I'm a very chilled guy; if someone says I'm not playing, I take it fine."

Tongue also welcomed the decision to retain head coach Brendon McCullum following an Ashes review, stating, "I've got a lot of good things to say about Baz." Reflecting on his personal achievements in Australia, where he has taken 23 wickets in four Tests at an outstanding average of 22.3, Tongue expressed pride in his performances.

Memorable Moments and Future Goals

Highlights included being named player of the match in England's lone victory at the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and dismissing Steve Smith four times in three matches. "I've always wanted to go away on an Ashes tour Down Under, and to be there for the Boxing Day Test and the New Year's Test in Sydney as well, it's what dreams are really made of," he shared. "Doing well at the MCG was the icing on the cake. I want to bring those moments more. I want to try and make an impact when I play games for England and try to put us in good positions to win games of cricket."

Cooley's role extends beyond the senior team, encompassing work with the Lions and Young Lions, while England maintains a flexible approach by occasionally bringing in other fast bowling coaches on an ad-hoc basis. This strategy, in place since 2022, has seen figures like James Anderson and Tim Southee contribute temporarily, but Cooley's early influence on Tongue suggests a promising partnership ahead.
