Freddie Steward Targets England Recall Through Leicester Tigers Success
The 25-year-old fullback was unceremoniously substituted during the first half of England's humiliating 42-21 defeat to Ireland in the Guinness Men's Six Nations tournament. This disappointing performance at home marked a significant setback for Steward, who had previously been a consistent presence in the national squad.
Borthwick's Tough Decision
England head coach Steve Borthwick made the difficult choice to exclude Steward from the subsequent matches against Italy and France. This decision came as a particular blow to the player who had started in eight of England's previous ten international fixtures, establishing himself as Borthwick's preferred option at the fullback position.
Steward now returns to Mattioli Woods Welford Road to rejoin Geoff Parling's Leicester Tigers squad, who currently occupy fourth place in the Gallagher PREM Rugby table. The team's confidence has been bolstered by their recent victory in the PREM Rugby Cup on home soil, creating positive momentum as they approach the crucial second half of the season.
Club Success as Pathway to International Return
The Midlands club hasn't secured the PREM title since 2022, when they triumphed under Borthwick's leadership. Steward believes that if he can contribute to replicating this achievement, he will capture the attention of his former club manager and potentially earn a starting position against South Africa in July.
"Every time you return to your club, it presents an opportunity to showcase your abilities on the field and continue developing," Steward explained. "This is how players improve, and I must remain hopeful that when the next campaign arrives, specifically the 2026 Nations Championship, my performances will be sufficient to regain selection."
Crucial League Matches Ahead
Leicester Tigers face third-placed Bristol Bears this Sunday as the league resumes competition. A victory for either team would significantly enhance their prospects of qualifying for the post-season Play-Offs, adding considerable importance to this upcoming fixture.
After failing to reach the Play-Offs in 2024, the Tigers demonstrated remarkable resilience by advancing to last season's PREM Rugby final. They narrowly lost to Bath Rugby at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham, in a closely contested match that highlighted their competitive capabilities.
Steward emphasized that consistent participation in post-season games should represent the standard expectation for a club of Leicester's stature. "Achieving at least Play-Off qualification must remain the ambition for an organization as substantial as Tigers," he stated. "We aspire to compete in these crucial matches annually, and this objective will drive our efforts throughout the remainder of the season."
Returning to a Positive Environment
"When you rejoin a club that maintains a strong position, it generates genuine excitement," Steward continued. "We have several important fixtures approaching, including the Bristol encounter, providing numerous opportunities for engagement and allowing me to fully immerse myself in the challenge."
Supporting Youth Rugby Development
Steward shared these reflections while attending the Continental Tyres Schools Cup finals at Allianz Stadium, Twickenham. This nationwide competition brings schools from across the country together, aiming to increase participation rates and foster enthusiasm for rugby among younger players.
Recent statistics reveal a 6% year-on-year increase in Age Grade players, reaching 181,453 registrations as of March 2. Notably, girls' registrations have surged by an impressive 14%, indicating growing diversity and engagement within the sport.
Reflecting on his own educational background at Norwich School, Steward highlighted the significance of school rugby competitions. "It's wonderful to witness this occasion and observe its positive impact on all participants," he remarked. "You can see the joy on players' faces as they leave the pitch, and the chance to compete at Allianz Stadium represents a unique lifetime experience."
Steward described school rugby as the most enjoyable period of his career, emphasizing the freedom of playing alongside close friends without adult responsibilities. "Such experiences motivate young athletes to continue participating, and schools play an essential role in sustaining the sport's development and popularity," he concluded.
The Continental Tyres Schools Cup constitutes a vital component of the age-grade rugby landscape, often serving as the initial environment where players develop their passion for the game. This grassroots foundation remains crucial for nurturing future talent and maintaining rugby's enduring appeal across generations.
