Manchester United's Brazilian Connection: 20-Year Legacy Continues with Ederson and Andrey Santos
Man United's Brazilian Legacy: Ederson and Santos Join

Manchester United are set to extend their Brazilian tradition into a 20th consecutive season, with Ederson and Andrey Santos poised to become the 12th and 13th Brazilians to represent the club. The duo will join from Atalanta and Chelsea respectively, adding to a lineage that began with Kleberson in 2003.

Brazilian Impact at Old Trafford

From Kleberson's underwhelming start, United have enjoyed significant contributions from Brazilians. Anderson, who began the current run in 2007, is one of four Brazilians to have played at least 150 games for the club, alongside Rafael da Silva, Fred, and Casemiro. Matheus Cunha is expected to leave a lasting memory, though others like Alex Telles and Antony made little impression.

The Brazilian with the shortest Old Trafford CV is Rodrigo Possebon, who joined at 18, impressed briefly, and left after eight appearances. He is still fondly remembered by fans from 2008 to 2010. Possebon believes the connection was forged by Sir Alex Ferguson, who appreciated Brazilian players' personality and ability to handle pressure. "I think Sir Alex started with this connection as he liked the Brazilian players," Possebon told the Manchester Evening News.

What to Expect from Ederson and Andrey Santos

Possebon, now football executive director at Parana Clube, praised the new signings: "I think they are both top players. United made the right decision. They are very strong, very intense, ready for the Premier League, but also have the quality and technique to play for this club."

Possebon's Journey and Ferguson's Influence

Possebon's own career was shaped by Ferguson. Despite limited first-team opportunities, he decided to become a sporting director after observing Ferguson's leadership. "It's impossible to describe him. The leadership, the way he managed all moments, not just as a manager but taking care of the club as a big picture," Possebon said.

Possebon's first-team debut came in a pre-season trip to South Africa in 2008. His second appearance, as a late substitute against Portsmouth, sparked a chant from away fans. "Rio Ferdinand said to me, 'Rod, they are singing a song about you,'" he recalled. His third appearance ended with a nasty leg injury from a tackle by Middlesbrough's Emanuel Pogatetz, but Possebon insists it wasn't career-altering: "Four weeks to get back in training. I didn't play much because of big names like Scholes, Carrick, Anderson, Giggs."

Post-Playing Career and Rebuilding Parana Clube

After leaving United in 2010, Possebon played alongside a young Neymar, won the Copa Libertadores, and later played in Italy and Vietnam. He joined Parana Clube in January, a historic club that recently fell on hard times. "We are rebuilding the club. We won promotion and expect to be in the first division soon," he said.

Possebon remains part of a 20-year chain linking Brazil to Manchester United. "There are United fans all over the world. Sometimes they find me on social media, but I'm not that famous," he joked.
