Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a 26-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe has been released from custody. The suspect is no longer part of the investigation, officers said in a statement on Saturday.
Police Confirm Release of Suspect
The man, who was taken into custody earlier this week, has been released without charge. A police spokesperson stated: "Following extensive inquiries, the 26-year-old man arrested in connection with the death of Ann Widdecombe has been released from custody and is no longer a suspect in this investigation."
Ann Widdecombe, 78, was found dead at her home in Devon on Wednesday morning. Police launched a murder investigation after a post-mortem examination revealed suspicious circumstances.
Investigation Continues
Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses and information. A police cordon remains in place at the property. Officers are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the area in the days before her death.
Widdecombe served as the Conservative MP for Maidstone and later as an MEP for the Brexit Party. She was also a well-known television personality, appearing on shows such as Strictly Come Dancing.
Community in Shock
Local residents expressed shock at the news. One neighbour said: "It's devastating. She was a familiar figure in the community, always friendly and approachable. We can't believe something like this has happened."
