Hull KR Celebrates Monumental Win at MKM Stadium with Record-Breaking Attendance
In a historic evening for rugby league, Hull Kingston Rovers secured a thrilling 30-24 victory over the Brisbane Broncos at MKM Stadium. The match drew a record-shattering sellout crowd of more than 24,000 spectators, marking a significant milestone for the club and its passionate supporters.
Unconventional Venue and a Creative Solution
Rather than hosting this pivotal fixture at their traditional home ground, Sewell Group Craven Park, Hull KR played their biggest ever game 6.2 miles west at the home of their fiercest rivals, Hull FC. This presented a unique challenge for the Robins' fans, who are accustomed to the iconic red and white seating of their own stadium, as they found themselves surrounded by the black and white colours of their opponents.
To address this, Specsavers stepped in with an innovative remedy. The opticians set up pop-up stations at the entrances of MKM Stadium, distributing 20,000 complimentary pairs of red-tinted glasses to Hull KR devotees. Inspired by traditional 3D cinema eyewear, these specially designed lenses allowed fans to instantly convert black into red, ensuring the venue appeared in their team's colours when viewed through the glasses.
A Visual Spectacle and Emotional Atmosphere
Just before kick-off, thousands of supporters lifted their red-tinted glasses in a collective show of support for Hull KR, creating a striking sea of red across the stands. This powerful visual moment made the traditional singalong to the iconic anthem Red Red Robin particularly special, enhancing the emotional atmosphere of the match.
Paul Lakin, CEO at Hull KR, commented on the initiative, stating, "For a fixture of this magnitude, we were committed to creating an atmosphere that reflected just how much it meant to our loyal fans. Bringing the spirit of our club to life in a stadium that isn't typically home was invaluable, and we were delighted to see supporters embracing the glasses on matchday."
Teamwork and Perspective Shift
The collaboration between Specsavers and Hull KR ensured that fans did not have to settle for the black and white surroundings, demonstrating how a small shift in perspective can make a significant difference. Neil Liddle, spokesperson for Specsavers, explained, "This initiative aimed to celebrate the passion, humour, and humble nature of Hull KR supporters while tapping into one of rugby league's most notable rivalries. For us, it served as a natural extension of our long-standing commitment to helping people see things differently, and better, when it matters most."
The match itself was a closely contested affair, with Hull KR emerging victorious in front of their enthusiastic supporters. Captains Elliot Minchella and Adam Reynolds were seen with the Betfred World Club Challenge Trophy, symbolising the club's achievement in this historic encounter.
This event not only highlighted Hull KR's on-field success but also showcased the creativity and community spirit that define rugby league. The use of red-tinted glasses turned a potential drawback into a memorable spectacle, reinforcing the bond between the club and its fans during a momentous occasion.
