The Miami Heat have waived guard Terry Rozier, who faces federal charges related to a gambling operation. The move, announced on Friday, was procedural and allows the Heat to sign another player before the postseason.
Rozier played in just one game for the Heat this season, the opener against Orlando on October 22, in which he did not play. He was arrested the following morning on charges that he provided information to help people win bets on his statistical performance in a 2023 game while with the Charlotte Hornets. The NBA placed Rozier on leave shortly after his arrest.
Despite his legal issues, Rozier has collected his full $26.6 million salary this season. An arbitrator ruled that he should receive the money, which the Heat had initially placed in an interest-bearing account.
The Heat traded for Rozier in January 2024, sending Kyle Lowry and a 2027 first-round pick to Charlotte. The Hornets later gave Miami a second-round pick in this year's draft, an unusual move believed to settle a dispute over undisclosed information at the time of the trade.
Rozier's contract, a four-year, $96.2 million deal, has now ended. He averaged 13.9 points per game over his career with the Hornets, Boston Celtics, and Heat, appearing in 95 games for Miami.
