Duckett Admits Ashes Misconduct, Withdraws from IPL

England batter Ben Duckett has publicly acknowledged that his off-field conduct during the team's recent Ashes series in Australia was inappropriate, stating he should not have placed himself in a compromising situation. The 31-year-old was filmed under the influence of alcohol following the second Test in December, a period when England trailed 2-0 in the series, which they ultimately lost 4-1.

Reflecting on Personal and Team Struggles

Duckett expressed regret over the incident, emphasising that it was unbecoming of a professional athlete. "I've held my hands up since then," he told reporters. "It's not something any professional sportsman should be doing. We were having a break that was planned before the series, and if we were winning, it probably wouldn't have been news and nobody would have cared. We were struggling as a side, and I was struggling as a player, so I shouldn't have put myself in a position like that."

Performance Woes and Support System

During the Ashes, Duckett managed only 202 runs at an average of 20.20, a performance he described as disappointing. He was also omitted from England's squad for the Twenty20 World Cup, where the team was eliminated by champions India in the semi-finals earlier this month. Despite these setbacks, Duckett highlighted the unwavering support from captain Ben Stokes, coach Brendon McCullum, and managing director Rob Key.

"I wasn't proud of how things went in Australia," Duckett stated. "But I've been good during my career in acknowledging when I've got it wrong, and hopefully, moving forward, people will see how much playing for England means."

Commitment to England Cricket

In a significant move to demonstrate his dedication, Duckett withdrew from the Indian Premier League (IPL) earlier this week, just four days before the tournament commenced. He had been purchased by Delhi Capitals for 20 million Indian rupees (approximately $211,000).

"For me, pulling out of the IPL, turning down a good chunk of money, and missing the opportunity to play with and against some of the best players in the world to be here playing for Notts (Nottinghamshire) is a step in the right direction to show how important playing for England is," he explained.

Looking Ahead to Future Challenges

England are scheduled to host New Zealand in a three-match Test series in June, providing Duckett with an opportunity to redeem himself on the international stage. His decision to prioritise national duties over lucrative IPL participation underscores a renewed focus on his cricketing career and reputation.
