Alcaraz-Sinner Relationship May Get Rocky, Says Petchey

Mark Petchey, the former British number one, has predicted that the relationship between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner could become more turbulent as their careers progress. Speaking exclusively to Express Sport, Petchey noted that while the pair currently share a strong bond, the intensity of their rivalry may lead to friction.

Respect and Rivalry

Petchey drew comparisons to the relationship between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, who were not close during their peak rivalry. He recalled the 2006 Italian Open final, where Nadal came from 1-4 down in the final set to save two match points and win a five-hour thriller. "The guys were stealing each other's dreams," Petchey said. He added that while Federer and Nadal are now close, that camaraderie developed after their careers.

Petchey believes Alcaraz and Sinner have managed to maintain a cordial relationship so far, but that could change. "I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a little bit more turbulent as it goes through at times, and then I think it will go back to kind of where it is," he said. He cited the risk of inflammatory situations during matches or off-court comments that could cause offense.

Media Saturation and Future Challenges

Petchey emphasized that in today's media-saturated world, something is likely to be said or done that one of them dislikes. However, he expressed confidence that the mutual respect between Alcaraz and Sinner is strong enough to overcome any difficulties. "The respect is too great that they'll overcome any difficulties that they potentially have," he said.

Alcaraz's Injury and Comeback

Alcaraz is currently recovering from a wrist injury that will keep him out of Wimbledon 2026. Petchey believes this break could be beneficial for the young Spaniard. "I don't think the reset's going to be so bad for Carlos," he said. "Having this time away will rekindle all the passion that he needs for the game, and I think that he'll come in fresher than ever."

Petchey noted that Alcaraz does not need to emulate Novak Djokovic's career to be successful. "He's going to give us enough entertainment, he's going to have enough titles to do it his way," Petchey said. He stressed that Alcaraz's wrist must be fully healed before returning, even if that means missing the rest of the year.
