Ferrari mechanic Francesco Cigarini sustained a fractured tibia and fibula during a chaotic pit stop at the Bahrain Grand Prix. The incident occurred on lap 36 when Kimi Raikkonen was released prematurely, colliding with Cigarini as he pulled away.
Raikkonen, who was not at fault, had been given a green light to leave but his left-rear tyre had not been fitted. The mechanic was knocked to the ground and taken to a local hospital for surgery. The FIA fined Ferrari €50,000 for the unsafe release.
Ferrari confirmed Cigarini will undergo surgery in Bahrain and announced a full investigation into the incident. Raikkonen retired from the race and commented: 'My job is to go when the light is green... this can happen sometimes.'
Team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who won the race, expressed sadness over the injury, sending his best wishes. Lewis Hamilton also offered support via Twitter, wishing the mechanic a speedy recovery.
