Motorists across the UK could save up to £200 a year by simply pressing a little-known button found in many petrol and diesel cars. The 'Eco mode' switch, typically located near the steering wheel or gear shift, reduces throttle response, limits engine power, and optimises gear shifts to lower fuel consumption.
According to experts at Car Finance Saver, activating eco mode in suitable conditions can cut fuel use by up to 5%. For the average UK driver, this could translate into annual savings of between £100 and £200. The savings are especially significant when fuel prices are high.
Pete Ridley, Motoring Expert at Car Finance Saver, explained: "It’s not magic, but it’s one of the easiest ways to improve fuel efficiency without changing your lifestyle or sacrificing comfort. It essentially tells your car to drive more gently, using just the energy it needs, and no more." He added that eco mode works best for everyday trips like school runs, errands, and town driving.
The button is usually found near the steering wheel or gear shift, though in some modern cars, the mode can be selected via the infotainment screen. Eco mode is most effective on short local trips, in slow-moving traffic, or on flat roads where speed and power are not essential — typically below 45 mph.
However, drivers are advised to avoid eco mode when they need extra power, such as when merging onto motorways, towing heavy loads, or climbing steep hills. In those situations, limiting power could compromise safety or performance.
