John Terry has revealed he no longer plans to become a manager, having turned down three job offers and failed to land two others after interviews. The former Chelsea and England captain, now a coaching consultant at Stamford Bridge, said the decision was personal and he is happy with his current role.
Terry, 41, left his position as Aston Villa assistant manager in July 2021 with the ambition of becoming a first-team boss. However, during a Q&A on Instagram, he admitted: 'Unfortunately no. When I left Villa, that was the aim. I won't be managing or coaching in the future.' He added that he turned down three jobs last year and interviewed for two more.
The ex-defender, who won 17 trophies including five Premier League titles with Chelsea, returned to the club in a consultancy role helping develop young players. He said he loves the job and values the time it allows him with his family.
Terry's comments mark a significant shift from his stated intentions when leaving Villa. At the time, he said he planned to visit clubs and managers across Europe to prepare for management. His former boss Dean Smith had predicted he would become a 'first-class manager'.
In a separate controversy, Terry faced criticism for showing support for former Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich earlier this year, describing him as 'the best' amid Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
