Johnny Herbert Casts Doubt on George Russell's Mercedes Future Amid Verstappen Rumours
Former Formula 1 driver Johnny Herbert has raised concerns about George Russell's long-term security at Mercedes, despite the British driver's impressive start to the 2026 season. Russell, aged 27, currently leads the Drivers' Standings with 51 points after winning the Australian Grand Prix and finishing second in China.
Verstappen's Potential Move Sparks Uncertainty
Herbert, who raced for Sauber and Jaguar in the 1990s, hinted that Russell could be displaced if Max Verstappen leaves Red Bull for Mercedes. Speaking on the Stay On Track podcast alongside Damon Hill, Herbert revealed, "I've heard little rumours again that with Max not being very happy where he is... is he going to be taken by Mercedes, which means they are going to get rid of George." Hill responded by suggesting Russell's position might always be temporary.
Internal Competition and Contract Details
Russell faces internal pressure from teammate Kimi Antonelli, who won the Chinese Grand Prix. Hill noted that Antonelli, aged 19 and seen as team principal Toto Wolff's protégé, might now be Mercedes' preferred driver. "Kimi is Toto's protégé, if you like. He's put his reputation on the line to get this guy in," Hill said, adding that Wolff was not desperate to re-sign Russell last year.
Russell signed a new contract in October 2025, described as a multi-year deal running through 2026 with performance-based clauses that could extend it to 2027. This places his future in his own hands, contingent on meeting specific targets.
Season Performance and Upcoming Race
Russell holds a four-point lead over Antonelli, thanks to winning the sprint race in China. Both drivers have secured a victory and a runner-up finish this season. They are set to compete head-to-head in the upcoming Japanese Grand Prix, where Russell's performance could be crucial for his Mercedes future amid the swirling rumours.
