Rio Ferdinand reveals 'one big disagreement' with Tuchel's England World Cup squad
Ferdinand disagrees with Tuchel over Palmer omission

Rio Ferdinand has questioned Thomas Tuchel’s decision to omit Cole Palmer from England’s World Cup squad, insisting the Three Lions should have taken a ‘gamble’ on the Chelsea star.

Tuchel unveiled his 26-man party last month with several surprises, leaving out a host of big names for the tournament in North America. Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Kobbie Mainoo, Eberechi Eze, Anthony Gordon, Ollie Watkins, Ivan Toney, and Reece James are set for their World Cup debuts, while Palmer, Harry Maguire, and Phil Foden—last season’s PFA Player of the Year—will watch from home.

Palmer’s omission stemmed from poor form, fitness concerns, and intense competition in attack, two years after his stunning goal in England’s Euro 2024 final defeat to Spain. Trent Alexander-Arnold also missed out after an inconsistent debut season with Real Madrid.

Explaining his selections, Tuchel said: ‘I can assure every fan that we have 26 committed players who know their roles and are ready to buy into team spirit. We have youthfulness, with six players who won U21 titles, and specialists for set pieces and penalties.’

England’s final warm-up match is done, and attention turns to their opening game against Croatia at Dallas’ AT&T Stadium. Tuchel started Jude Bellingham in the No.10 role behind Anthony Gordon, Noni Madueke, and Harry Kane against Costa Rica.

Ferdinand, speaking on his YouTube channel, said: ‘I absolutely love Tuchel, but there’s one thing I disagree with: Cole Palmer. He can impact the biggest games, scored in a Euros final, won the Club World Cup in this heat. I would have gambled on him.’

Ferdinand added: ‘The best teams have something different. Palmer has ability and mentality. He wasn’t going to start, but he could provide a moment. I would have left out Jordan Henderson for him.’

The former Manchester United defender is pessimistic about England’s chances, predicting a semi-final exit. He warned: ‘If England play Mexico in Mexico City and then Brazil in Miami, the heat could leave them with zero left in the tank.’
