Conor McGregor's long-awaited return to the octagon ended in disaster at UFC 329, where he suffered a suspected ACL injury just 69 seconds into his welterweight main event against Max Holloway. The 37-year-old Irish fighter is now expected to face a lengthy medical suspension from the Nevada State Athletic Commission, with a six-month ban considered inevitable.
Injury Details and Fight Outcome
The fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on July 11, 2026, was stopped officially at one minute and nine seconds after McGregor threw a left-leg kick and appeared to cause serious damage to his right knee. UFC CEO Dana White confirmed the suspicion, stating, "We're assuming blown ACL. The doctor's think the same thing too." McGregor was left floored on the canvas, and Holloway immediately called for a rematch.
This marked McGregor's first outing in five years, following a devastating leg break against Dustin Poirier in July 2021. He had been desperate to avenge his 2013 featherweight loss to Holloway in Boston, but the contest barely got off the ground.
McGregor's Social Media Response
McGregor took to social media to explain he was not carrying a pre-existing injury. "My head gasket is gone," he said. "Destroyed. I had no injury / injuries going into the fight. I was throwing kicks, planted and jumping, all throughout camp as well as backstage before the fight. This came out of nowhere. I am beyond dark here. I can only describe it as hell."
The injury raises serious doubts over whether the former two-weight world champion will ever compete inside the cage again, with retirement now a possibility.
