Alex Dunne Reveals Why He Chose to Leave McLaren's F1 Programme
Alex Dunne Explains McLaren Exit and Future F1 Ambitions

Irish racing prodigy Alex Dunne has broken his silence on the circumstances surrounding his departure from the McLaren Formula One family, confirming the move was a deliberate and strategic choice made to secure his future in the sport.

The Strategic Decision Behind the McLaren Exit

Contrary to speculation, Alex Dunne's exit from the McLaren young driver programme in October 2025 was entirely his own decision. The 20-year-old explained to Balls.ie that he initiated the split to carve a clearer path towards his ultimate ambition: a seat in Formula One. Dunne felt the move was essential to avoid a potential year on the sidelines in 2026, with McLaren's current F1 driver line-up of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri firmly established.

"It was actually my decision," Dunne stated, emphasising the voluntary nature of his departure. He acknowledged his father's initial hesitation but said he felt "more than comfortable" with the choice, viewing it as a necessary step within a larger, calculated plan to reach the top tier of motorsport.

Positive Reflections and Valuable Lessons

Despite choosing to leave, Dunne speaks glowingly of his time with the reigning world champions. He expressed immense gratitude towards CEO Zak Brown and the team for the "pretty special" opportunities afforded to him. A standout moment was his successful FP1 debut at the Austrian Grand Prix, where he impressed by finishing within two tenths of a second of regular driver Oscar Piastri's pace.

"I’ll always thank McLaren for that opportunity," Dunne remarked, highlighting the value of that experience. He also offered insight into working alongside the team's star drivers, describing both Lando Norris and Piastri as "normal people" who just happen to be on television more often. Observing their professional approach to a race weekend was, in his words, "pretty cool" and provided invaluable lessons for his own burgeoning career.

Future Focus: The 2026 Campaign and Beyond

With his McLaren chapter closed, Dunne's gaze is fixed firmly on the future. His immediate goal is to challenge for the championship in his second season in Formula 2, where he will drive for Rodin Motorsport in 2026. Being unattached to a specific F1 junior programme could now work in his favour, offering greater flexibility to negotiate with various teams as the driver market for the 2027 season begins to form.

At the time of his McLaren departure, Dunne was heavily linked with a switch to the Red Bull junior stable overseen by Helmut Marko, though a deal never materialised. The talented Irishman has also been connected with Alpine, a team that may be evaluating its options as it considers Franco Colapinto's long-term prospects for 2026.

Alex Dunne's story is now one of independent ambition, as he bets on his own talent and results in F2 to open the door to the Formula One grid he is determined to join.
