Argentina defender Cristian Romero has aggravated a knee injury that is likely to see him miss his country's final group stage game at the World Cup. The Tottenham centre-back, 28, has been managing a knee issue for two months, which caused him to miss the last six Premier League games of the season. Despite this, he was deemed fit enough to travel to the World Cup with Argentina and started the first two matches of the tournament.
Romero's limited minutes in World Cup matches
Romero played 80 minutes in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria but lasted only 57 minutes in Monday's 2-0 victory against Austria. He was replaced by veteran former Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi, who continues to compete at the top level at 38 years old.
Scaloni confirms injury, not a new problem
Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni confirmed that Romero was substituted due to injury, but emphasised it was not a new issue. 'We don't know the extent of Cuti Romero's issue; it's something he's been dealing with for a while now,' Scaloni said. 'We hope it's nothing serious. Not only because he's important, even though he can be replaced, but it's always important to have everyone available. He'll undergo tests tomorrow or the day after.'
Likely rested for Jordan match
With two victories from two games and a final group stage match against Jordan on Sunday, it is unlikely that Romero will be risked. The combative defender will most likely be rested and hopes to return in time for the round of 32, provided the knee issue has not worsened significantly.
Messi's record-breaking performance
The fitness concern for Romero was a rare negative on an otherwise successful day for Argentina, as Lionel Messi scored both goals against Austria. The 38-year-old has now netted all of Argentina's goals in the tournament, following a hat-trick in the 3-0 win over Algeria. Messi set the record for most goals ever scored in World Cups, surpassing Germany's Miroslav Klose, who had 16. Messi now has 18 World Cup goals after scoring his 121st and 122nd international goals against Austria.
Messi reflects on victory and record
Speaking after the match, Messi said: 'I'm very happy about the victory above all. It was crucial, tough and hard-fought, it gives us peace of mind for what's ahead. The important thing is the qualification, winning all the matches is always in our plans. This whole group lives this with a lot of happiness. When we get together, we enjoy being together, competing, training, the day-to-day, and seeing the people like this.'
Whether Messi will be rested against Jordan remains to be seen, as Argentina look to secure top spot in their group.
