Manchester United have been given a boost after learning that Mason Mount's injury is not serious. The United midfielder came off after just 20 minutes during Saturday's 1-1 draw with Paris Saint-Germain.
Mount's fitness concerns eased
It left Michael Carrick sweating on the fitness of Mount, 27, with less than two weeks to go until the Red Devils start their Premier League season away to newly promoted Hull City. But the midfielder left the stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden walking freely, suggesting that his pre-season wasn't over.
Mount has now flown to Ireland ahead of United's next training camp in County Kildare. He'll be joined by Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo and Lisandro Martinez, who were each given additional time off following the World Cup.
Impressive pre-season form
Having only started two of Carrick's 17 games in charge last season, Mount has given a good account of himself in pre-season. Playing in a deeper role, the former Chelsea star has put together an encouraging run of performances.
Mount could form part of a new-look midfield against Hull. Summer signings Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans are in contention to start, while Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes will expect to play.
Transfer implications
United have been intent on signing a third midfielder throughout the transfer window, but Mount's displays could prompt them to shelve their plans and focus on recruiting for other areas. Left-back is a position which the Red Devils want to strengthen before deadline day on Tuesday, September 1.
Mount's resurgence has also seen ex-United winger Lee Sharpe label him captain material. The 27-year-old currently isn't part of United's leadership group.
Sharpe's praise
"I think if he can stay fit and play the way he has done previous seasons, Mason Mount, with his experience, would always be in with a shout," Sharpe told Goal. "I think he would not necessarily rule by fear, but rule by example."
Mount has managed 72 appearances since signing for United in a deal worth up to £60million in the summer of 2023. His career at Old Trafford has been stunted by injuries and constant managerial changes.
Last season was his most productive, however, scoring three goals and providing one assist in 25 games. Carrick will be hoping to get even more out of Mount in the 2026-27 campaign.
