Lamine Yamal missed Spain's training session on Thursday ahead of the 2026 World Cup final against Argentina, raising concerns that the Barcelona forward could be sidelined for the championship match.
Yamal's injury history and tournament performance
The 19-year-old entered the tournament carrying a hamstring injury and was used sparingly during the group stage. He has played every minute of the knockout rounds but has clearly not been at full fitness, recording just one goal and no assists in seven appearances.
Yamal was filmed sitting on a yoga mat on the pitch and appeared to be in discomfort while speaking with head coach Luis de la Fuente. He was also photographed with strapping on his left thigh.
Pedro Porro also absent from training
Tottenham right-back Pedro Porro also missed training, which is a concern given his impressive performances at the World Cup, including scoring twice in the semi-final against France. However, multiple Spanish outlets, including AS, report that both absences are precautionary and that De la Fuente is simply managing their workload ahead of the final.
Final matchup and generational talent clash
The final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey pits two Barcelona talents against each other: Yamal and Lionel Messi, with many fans eager to see them face off. Spain captain Mikel Oyarzabal said after the semi-final: 'Hopefully we can put the icing on the cake in five days' time. We've earned the right to dream, to have the title in our sights. If I get the chance to help out without scoring a goal, I'll be just as happy.'
