Bull rider killed at rodeo after being thrown and trampled

A bull rider has died after being thrown from a bull and struck in the chest during a rodeo event in Ohio. Jason Blake Saylor, 35, suffered what police described as a "traumatic chest injury" after the animal kicked or stomped on him.

Incident at Fox Hollow Rodeo

The incident occurred at the Fox Hollow Rodeo near Waynesville, a town about 20 miles south of Dayton. Police were called to the scene at around 7.40pm after being alerted to an injured rider. Saylor had been wearing appropriate protective gear, but his chest protection had not prevented the injury.

Paramedics treated him at the scene before taking him to a local hospital, where he died shortly after arriving. Officers are treating the death as a fatal accident.

Organisers' statement and tributes

Organisers of Fox Hollow Rodeo released a statement on Sunday saying: "Our hearts are absolutely broken following the tragic loss of one of our bull riders and brothers in Christ, last night at Fox Hollow Rodeo." They added: "There are no words to express the sadness we are feeling. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and everyone affected by this heartbreaking tragedy."

Saylor was believed to be a long-time professional bull rider who took part in numerous rodeos. On social media, he had posted photos and videos of himself competing, including several narrow escapes from injury.

Friends and family paid tribute online. Jake Barker, who identified himself as Saylor's best friend, wrote in part: "I don't know how I'm gonna go on an never hear that belly laugh again." He added: "I am just happy an relieved he finally was sooo close to god that I know I'll see him one day again... I love you brother, my life will never be the same without you here."

Saylor's girlfriend, Linsey Marie, also shared a post saying: "I'm still waiting on my good morning text Blake Saylor!" She added: "Knowing you've always said that when it's your time to go you hope it's doing what you love the most, riding bulls! I just wish I could hold you one last time and tell you how much I love you."
