World Cup 2026: Three Teams Eliminated, Three Qualify for Knockouts
World Cup 2026: Three Teams Out, Three Qualify

The 2026 World Cup has seen three teams eliminated after just two group stage matches, thanks to a new tiebreaker rule that prioritizes head-to-head record over goal difference. Haiti, Turkiye, and Tunisia have been knocked out, while Mexico, the USA, and Germany have secured their spots in the Round of 32.

New Tiebreaker Rule Changes the Game

For the first time since 1970, the World Cup has replaced goal difference with head-to-head record as the primary tiebreaker for teams level on points. This change, introduced for the expanded 48-team tournament, has accelerated eliminations and qualifications. In Qatar 2022, only two teams were eliminated after two matches; in 2026, three have already exited.

Under the new rule, a team can win its group after two games if it is three points clear of second place, provided it beat the second-place team. Similarly, a team in fourth can be eliminated if it lost to the third-place team in either match, even if only three points behind. This has already occurred in three groups.

Eliminated Teams

Haiti

Haiti became the first team eliminated after losses to Scotland (1-0) and Brazil (3-0) in Group C. Their defeat to Scotland, a must-win game, proved decisive. Haiti's World Cup campaign ends prematurely for the first time since 1974.

Turkiye

Turkiye suffered a shock 2-0 loss to Australia and a 1-0 defeat to Paraguay, who played the entire second half with 10 men. These results ended their tournament after just 10 days, making their final group match against USA meaningless.

Tunisia

Tunisia's campaign was disastrous: a 5-1 loss to Sweden led to the sacking of coach Sabri Lamouchi, the first manager fired after one game at a World Cup. Under new coach Herve Renard, Tunisia lost 4-0 to Japan, confirming their elimination.

Qualified Teams

Three teams have already secured top spot in their groups and advanced to the Round of 32:

  • Mexico (Group A winners)
  • USA (Group D winners)
  • Germany (Group E winners)

The Round of 32, a new stage for the expanded tournament, will feature the 12 group winners, 12 runners-up, and eight best third-placed teams. Matches run from June 28 to July 3.

Impact of the New Rule

The head-to-head tiebreaker has increased the stakes in group matches. In previous World Cups, no team had secured top spot after two games; in 2026, three have done so. The rule also means that a team can be eliminated after two matches if it lost to the third-placed side, as seen with Haiti, Turkiye, and Tunisia.
