England manager Thomas Tuchel has defended his animated exchange with defender Djed Spence during the goalless draw against Ghana, insisting he had to shout to be heard. The Tottenham Hotspur full-back received a public earful from Tuchel on the touchline, but the boss clarified it was about tactical demands rather than a personal dispute.
Tuchel Explains Sideline Outburst
When asked about his interaction with Spence, Tuchel said: “Defensively yes but I wanted him to be more engaged in the attacking phase. To start our attacks a bit wider and have more runs through the last line but overall it was his first start for England in a major tournament and I always put it into perspective.”
“I have to scream because nobody hears me otherwise. It’s all good with Djed. We brought on Nico O’Reilly and it almost paid off with a header and a big chance for Harry Kane,” Tuchel added.
Spence Avoids Sanction Over Partey Snub
Meanwhile, Djed Spence is unlikely to face any disciplinary action from FIFA for refusing to shake hands with Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey before kick-off. Television footage captured the Spurs defender avoiding the customary pre-match handshake with Partey, who faces seven counts of rape and one count of sexual assault in the United Kingdom. The charges relate to allegations made by four women concerning incidents allegedly occurring in London between 2020 and 2022.
It is understood that FIFA's disciplinary committee is not expected to intervene in the matter, though no official confirmation has been provided.
