Mboko Apologises to Serena Williams After Injury

World No. 9 Victoria Mboko has issued an emotional apology to Serena Williams after a knee injury forced the pair to withdraw from the HSBC Championships at London’s Queen’s Club, bringing Williams' sensational return to competition to an abrupt end.

Mboko's Statement of Regret

The Canadian teenager, who teamed up with the 23-time Grand Slam champion in doubles, revealed on Friday that she sustained an MCL injury to her left knee during a fall in her singles match on Wednesday. This injury has ruled her out of the remainder of the grass season, including Wimbledon.

In a heartfelt statement, Mboko expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to play alongside Williams and apologised for the premature end to their partnership. “Thank you @serenawilliams for giving me this incredible opportunity to play alongside you. I learnt so much from you and am so sorry our tournament came to an end prematurely, but I hope we can play together again soon and finish what we started,” she wrote.

Williams' Response

Williams, who made her return to competition nearly four years after retiring, publicly thanked Mboko for being part of her comeback. “What a fun and memorable week at @hsbcchampionships. Thank you to everyone who made it so special. Wishing you a speedy recovery, @vickymboko. Can’t wait to see you back on court,” the 44-year-old wrote.

Williams' Next Move

The former world No. 1 has now received a wildcard into the doubles draw at the WTA 500 event in Berlin, where she is expected to partner with world No. 10 Karolina Muchova. It remains uncertain whether Williams will compete at Wimbledon later this month, with the wildcard committee set to meet soon to discuss potential entries. All England Club chair Deborah Jevans hinted that Williams' past success at Wimbledon would be a factor in their decision.

Mboko's Recovery and Title Defence

Mboko, who won the Canadian Open title as a wildcard last year, is now focused on her recovery in time to defend her title. The WTA 1000 event begins on August 2, and the reigning champion is receiving the best medical care to ensure a swift return to court.
