England Fan Describes World Cup Semi-Final Loss Atmosphere
England Fan on World Cup Semi-Final Loss Atmosphere

England fan Andy Payne, who attended the World Cup semi-final against Argentina, described the atmosphere inside the stadium as "the most extraordinary place to be" despite the devastating loss. Speaking on BBC Breakfast on Thursday, July 16, Payne recounted the heartbreak of watching Argentina score two late goals to win 2-1, sending Lionel Messi to his third World Cup final.

Match Details and Fan Reaction

Anthony Gordon scored for England in the 55th minute, but Argentina equalized and then took the lead in the final minutes. Payne, who traveled across the United States with his wife Kirsty to watch every match, said she was "destroyed." He noted, "This is my third World Cup semi-final, and Kirsty's second... we're used to this disappointment. We came so close today, I thought we were going to do it."

Managerial Decisions and Team Performance

Payne defended manager Thomas Tuchel, saying, "Thomas Tuchel might get a lot of criticism for today but everything done so far has been great." He added that Tuchel put out his best available players and that this was the first time he didn't make early substitutions. "When we saw the goal, my view and other people in the ground were the same... we thought we've got one goal, we might get two... And unfortunately, I think Tuchel looked at his team and went, 'well how am I going to improve this team?' because the players that weren't on the field either weren't the best players or were injured."

Atmosphere and Fan Support

Despite being outnumbered by Argentina fans, Payne described the atmosphere as "unbelievable." He said, "Every single England fan who was there was behind the team. None of the England fans who were in that ground boo'ed the players." He praised the team spirit and the send-off the players received from fans after the match. "They came to us and they saluted us and we saluted them. It's not a matter of life or death, it's a game of football."
