A shadow fell over York's prestigious Ebor Festival on Friday after a devastating incident saw superstar mare Highfield Princess suffer a fatal injury during the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes.
The racing world was left in shock when the seven-year-old, a six-time Group winner and popular favourite, fell abruptly just after passing the winning post in the £500,000 feature race.
Jockey Jason Hart was thrown from the horse in the distressing fall but remarkably escaped serious injury. The race meeting was immediately halted as veterinary staff rushed to attend to the stricken mare.
Track Vets Make Heartbreaking Decision
Despite the best efforts of on-course veterinarians, the decision was taken to euthanise Highfield Princess due to the severity of her injuries. The racing community took to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to the remarkable horse.
Trainer John Quinn, visibly emotional, described the mare as "an absolute superstar" who had "been brilliant for us." He added: "She's been a revelation. We're all very upset."
Racing World Mourns Popular Performer
Highfield Princess had become a fan favourite through her incredible rags-to-riches story. Beginning her career in humble handicaps, she rose through the ranks to compete at the highest level of global sprinting, accumulating over £1.3 million in prize money.
Her notable victories included wins in the Prix de l'Abbaye at Longchamp and the Flying Five Stakes at the Curragh. The racing community has been united in mourning the loss of one of the sport's most popular and successful performers.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks in thoroughbred racing, even at the most prestigious meetings. The British Horseracing Authority has confirmed they will be reviewing the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
