The Premier League has explained why two goals were allowed to stand after being initially ruled offside during Fulham's 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Craven Cottage. Both decisions came following VAR checks, which overturned the assistant referees' flags.
Harry Wilson thought he had given Fulham a 17th-minute lead when he fired past Alisson after a pass from Raul Jimenez. The flag went up for offside, but VAR determined that Virgil van Dijk had played Wilson onside, and the goal was awarded.
Liverpool equalised in the 57th minute through Florian Wirtz, who swept home Conor Bradley's pass. Again the assistant flagged, but VAR confirmed Wirtz was onside. The Premier League match centre stated: 'VAR checked the referee’s call of no goal – and established that Wirtz was in an onside position and recommended that the goal was awarded.'
Former Fulham goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer expressed surprise, telling BBC Radio 5 Live: 'Looking at replays of that Liverpool goal, every frame that they stop at it looks offside. It's a strange one.'
Liverpool appeared to have snatched victory when Cody Gakpo turned in a cross in added time, but Fulham substitute Harrison Reed replied with a stunning long-range strike in the 97th minute to earn his side a point.
