Michael van Gerwen, the three-time world darts champion, has faced a challenging period both professionally and personally. The 36-year-old Dutchman has won only one PDC major title this year, his lowest tally since earning his PDC Tour card in 2011. This slump in form coincides with his announcement in May of his separation from his wife Daphne, after 11 years of marriage.
The couple, who have two children together, had been together since 2008. Van Gerwen shared the news on social media, stating: 'It is with great sadness that I inform you that Daphne and I have decided to end our relationship. As a result, I have withdrawn from the upcoming tournaments. I am sorry to disappoint my fans, but I trust that they will understand my decision. We are facing a difficult time and ask that you respect our privacy.'
Despite the difficulties, Van Gerwen boasts an estimated net worth of £7 million, accumulated through prize money and sponsorship deals. His career prize money exceeds £10 million, boosted by an £80,000 winner's cheque after defeating Luke Littler at the World Series of Darts in September. He has sponsorship agreements with companies including Leyland Trade, dartshop.tv, Keuken Concurrent, Van Mossel Automotive, and XQ Darts Max.
Van Gerwen holds 48 PDC major singles titles, second only to Phil Taylor, and leads the all-time list for PDC Pro Tour victories with 90. He is set to make a guest appearance on the darts-themed TV game show Bullseye on Christmas Day, hosted by Freddie Flintoff.
Reflecting on his rivalry with Luke Littler, who defeated him in the World Darts Championship final last year, Van Gerwen remains confident in his intimidating presence. He said: 'Yes, of course. Ask Luke Littler who he doesn't want to play. He will definitely say my name, 100 per cent. And if he doesn't, he's lying.'
