Danylo Yavhusishyn, a 21-year-old Ukrainian national competing under the name Aonishiki Arata, has made history by becoming the first person from his country to win an elite-level sumo championship in Japan. His triumphant moment came during the Kyushu tournament on Sunday, where he secured a decisive victory against Mongolian-born wrestler Hoshoryu.
The young athlete's journey to this championship has been anything but conventional. Yavhusishyn fled Ukraine over three and a half years ago following Russia's full-scale invasion and hasn't returned home since arriving in Japan in 2022.

The Kyushu tournament represented a significant challenge for the Ukrainian wrestler, spanning two intense weeks of competition. Yavhusishyn demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout, finishing with an impressive record of 12 wins and only three losses.
