Fernando Torres Takes Coaching Steps Amid Liverpool Manager Speculation
Former Liverpool star Fernando Torres has embarked on a coaching career that has already seen him learn from one of the best, with predictions emerging that he could one day take the helm at Anfield. The 42-year-old Spaniard, who retired from playing in 2019, has been gaining valuable experience in youth football and even shadowed Jurgen Klopp during the German manager's final season at Liverpool.
From Liverpool Legend to Coaching Prospect
Torres enjoyed a prolific playing career, scoring 81 goals for Liverpool before his £50 million move to Chelsea in 2011. He also had stints in Spain, Italy, and Japan, concluding his career at Sagan Tosu. Since retiring, he has transitioned into coaching, starting in 2021 within the academy system at his former club Atletico Madrid. Since 2025, he has been managing Atletico Madrileno, the club's second-string team competing in Spain's third tier.
Learning from the Best: Shadowing Klopp
In 2024, Torres took a significant step in his coaching development by shadowing Jurgen Klopp and assistant manager Pep Lijnders ahead of a Premier League match against Brighton. "I've had the opportunity to see how everything works from the inside, which is great," Torres told club media at the time. "I'm a big fan of Jurgen and his staff... I have the chance to see why the club grows a lot. It's amazing to be here and to be able to meet with Jurgen and Pep and all the staff to learn and try to understand the Liverpool way."
Endorsements from Football Figures
Former Spain international striker Fernando Llorente has publicly backed Torres for a future managerial role at Liverpool. "Fernando Torres as Liverpool manager one day? Definitely," Llorente stated. "He's taken a different path to Cesc Fabregas, he has been patient and has preferred to start little by little with the youth team, gaining experience. I think Fernando will become a great coach because he had an incredible career, knows a lot about football and has surely been preparing for the right moment to make the jump."
Armando de la Morena, who coached Torres during his youth days at Atletico Madrid, echoed this sentiment. "A coach like Fernando, knowing his career a bit, as a player and always with the respect that he has acted, has the conditions to be a great coach," he said. "I know it from the players too, who tell me wonders about him, how he transmits, how he gives them the concepts. So what I see in him is that if everything is going the right way, then we have a future coach for Spanish football and for Atletico and hopefully for the national team as well."
Current Success with Atletico Madrileno
In his second season in charge of Atletico Madrileno, Torres has guided the team to a strong position in the league. With five games remaining, they sit in third place, eyeing promotion to the Segunda Division and are on track for a play-off spot if they cannot close the four-point gap to league leaders Eldense. This success further bolsters his credentials as a rising coaching talent.
The combination of his playing legacy at Liverpool, hands-on learning from Klopp, and steady progress in management positions Torres as a compelling candidate for future leadership roles at Anfield, should opportunities arise.
