Tiger Woods Absent from Masters as Jason Day Criticises DUI Arrest
Tiger Woods is a topic of conversation at the Masters without even being present at Augusta National. His absence stems from his recent arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence, which has drawn criticism from fellow golfer Jason Day.
Details of the Incident and Legal Proceedings
Florida authorities determined that Woods was impaired on March 27 when his Land Rover struck a trailer and flipped on its side on a residential street. They found two painkiller pills in his pocket. Woods was arrested and briefly jailed for refusing to submit to a urine test. He has since entered a plea of not guilty and was granted a motion to seek treatment outside the country.
Jason Day expressed his thoughts on the situation, stating, "He's just a human being like everyone else and we have struggles. It's unfortunate. The only thing that I don't understand is that it's a little bit selfish of him to drive and put other people in harm's way, as well." Day added, "But when you're the player that he was and how strong-willed he is, he thinks he can do almost anything. And that's probably why he's driving and a little bit under the influence."
Historical Context and Recent Challenges
This marks the second consecutive year Woods has missed the Masters, under entirely different circumstances. In 2025, he ruptured his Achilles tendon and did not attend the Masters Club dinner for champions. Woods is a five-time champion at the Masters, with his last win in 2019 completing a remarkable comeback in golf.
Since that victory, he has faced numerous health issues, including a severe car accident in 2021 that crushed his right leg and ankle, as well as multiple surgeries on his Achilles tendon and back. His career has also been marred by previous legal troubles, such as a 2017 arrest for a bad mix of painkillers.
Reactions from the Golf Community
Nick Faldo was particularly critical in an interview with Britain's Daily Telegraph, saying, "There are two sides to this right now. There’s one side that’s like ... let’s care for Tiger. And then there has got to be a responsibility and an accountability side as well." Faldo emphasised, "Forget about golf. We are not meant to be on the streets with two pills in our pocket. The bottom line is that I really think that this is a serious issue and something should be done that is a little bit more serious than waving him off to a tropical island."
Harris English reflected on Woods' legacy, noting, "He’s such a legend in this game, somebody I looked up to. Watching him win around this place in ’97 is kind of the reason I started getting into golf. I know he’s going to get through this. He has a big fight ahead of him. He’s a fighter. That’s what he does."
Additional Absences and Tournament Impact
Phil Mickelson, a three-time Masters champion, is also skipping the tournament due to a family health matter. This is the first time since 1994 that neither Woods nor Mickelson has been at Augusta National for the first major of the year. Mickelson, who plays with LIV Golf, participates in majors only four times annually.
Jacob Bridgeman, one of the newcomers to the Masters, was unaware of Mickelson's absence, highlighting the generational shift in golf. Woods' influence extends beyond his playing career, including his work on a short course during the refurbishing of a municipal course in Augusta and the opening of a TGR Learning Lab in the city.
Day, who once reached No. 1 in the world, shared his personal connection, saying, "He was my hero — he's my hero. The reason why I play golf is because of this tournament and Tiger. It’s hard to see him go through what he’s going through, and especially under the microscope. It must be hard to be who he is and have everything, everyone look on, kind of down on him." He concluded, "Some people want him to fail. Some people obviously want him to succeed. It’s really difficult for me to go through that and watch him, and I know that he’s getting the help now, which is good. I’m just hoping he comes out on the other side and is better."
