The sister of a 15-year-old footballer who died on the M60 motorway has paid an emotional tribute, describing him as 'protective' and 'jokey'. Israel Iyabor, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, died at the scene near junction 20 for Blackley last Sunday after police were called to a 'concern for welfare'. His 17-year-old sister has now spoken of her family's grief and launched a fundraising appeal for his funeral.
In a statement, she said: 'He was protective of those close to him and those he loved. He would do anything for them. He was also very light-hearted and jokey. At school he was known as the class clown.' Israel was a pupil at Co-op Academy North Manchester and played youth football for Hyde United FC and Manchester Panthers JFC.
The family have set up a GoFundMe page to cover funeral costs. It describes Israel as 'a son, brother and most importantly a friend', noting his love for football, martial arts and his Christian faith. 'His death was shocking and unimaginable. He was truly a shining star,' the page says.
His sister urged people to check on loved ones, adding: 'Mental health is a real thing. You never know what someone is going through.' Police have passed a file to the coroner, and an inquest is expected. Flowers and football shirts have been left near the scene, and Hyde United held a minute's silence before their match against Curzon Ashton.
