Bristol City have completed the signing of Wales midfielder Sophie Ingle on a free transfer, bringing the 33-year-old back to the club she first joined 11 years ago. The move marks a significant coup for the Women's Super League 2 side as they prepare for the upcoming season.
Ingle leaves Chelsea after a trophy-laden seven-year spell during which she won five league titles, three Women's FA Cups and two League Cups. The former Wales captain suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury last September but returned to play at Euro 2025 for Wales, capping a 281-day recovery.
The midfielder, who was awarded an OBE in 2023 for services to football, also represented Team GB at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. She previously played for Bristol City in the 2014/15 campaign before moving to Liverpool, where she was twice named players' player of the year.
Bristol City are understood to have faced competition for Ingle's signature, but she was attracted by the club's ambition to secure promotion. She has signed a two-year contract with an option for a further year. New head coach Charlotte Healy, appointed in June, played a key role in the transfer.
Ingle said: 'After speaking to Charlotte and everything that the club offers both on and off the pitch, it felt like a good fit. The club wants to get promoted and I love winning.'
