Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in frame for shock Man Utd return after Amorim sacking
Solskjaer linked with Manchester United return

Manchester United are considering a sensational interim return for former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, following the sudden dismissal of head coach Ruben Amorim.

Amorim's Departure Opens the Door

The club confirmed Ruben Amorim's exit on Monday morning, just over a year after his appointment in November 2024. The Portuguese coach, who led United to the UEFA Europa League final in May 2025, was relieved of his duties with the team sitting sixth in the Premier League.

An official statement explained the decision was made to give the squad the best chance of a high finish this season. Darren Fletcher will take temporary charge for the midweek fixture against Burnley, marking his first stint as a head coach at the top level.

Solskjaer Emerges as a Leading Contender

With Fletcher lacking experience, United's hierarchy is now debating appointing a more seasoned interim manager to steer the club through the remainder of the campaign. According to reports, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's name is prominently featured in these discussions.

Solskjaer, who was himself sacked by United in 2021 after a three-year spell, is reportedly available after recently leaving Turkish side Besiktas. His previous tenure at Old Trafford saw the team achieve league finishes of sixth, third, and second place.

This potential opportunity arises after Solskjaer's hopes of managing the Norwegian national team were dashed, with Ståle Solbakken extending his contract until 2028.

Former Teammates Weigh In

Former United defender Ronny Johnsen suggested a return was logical. "He has experience with the club and knows the culture," Johnsen said.

However, ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Erik Thorstvedt expressed surprise at the link. "I would be very surprised if Ole Gunnar returns. Although I know that many have reminisced about how good they were under him," he added.

The Search for a Permanent Successor

While an interim solution is sought, the club is also lining up candidates for the permanent role. Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner is the current favourite to take over at Old Trafford, following his successful spell in South London.

A complicating factor is Glasner's contract, which runs until this summer. United may opt to wait until then to avoid paying compensation to Palace and to maintain positive relations.

Other names in the frame for the permanent job include:

  • Recently departed Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca
  • Bournemouth's Andoni Iraola
  • High-profile figures like Zinedine Zidane and Xavi
  • Former England boss Gareth Southgate

The coming days will be crucial as Manchester United navigate this unexpected managerial crisis, with a beloved former figure now in the mix for a dramatic comeback.
