Liverpool manager Arne Slot has delivered a clear message about the club's financial position ahead of the January transfer window, bluntly stating the Reds do not possess 'unlimited money'. This comes after a summer of heavy investment that saw the Merseyside club spend close to £400m on new players.
A Summer of Significant Spending
The club's expenditure in the recent window approached a staggering £400 million, with high-profile arrivals including Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike, and Florian Wirtz. Further reinforcements came in the form of Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong, and Giovanni Leoni.
Despite this lucrative outlay, the investment has yet to yield positive results on the pitch. Liverpool have struggled in the opening months of the 2025/26 campaign, suffering six defeats in their first 16 Premier League fixtures. This poor form has left Slot's side languishing in seventh place in the table.
Slot's Candid Assessment of Finances
Ahead of Saturday's clash with Tottenham Hotspur, the Dutch head coach provided a telling insight into the likely activity at Anfield next month. He moved to correct a perceived public misconception about the club's resources.
"The outside world wants to believe we have unlimited money but that is not true," Slot stated. "You insiders know – and you are the only ones because the outside world only talks about our spending – what we have brought in (money) to spend."
He defended the club's model, acknowledging it sometimes leads to squad shortages in certain positions but expressing full faith in the approach. "That is the way we work over here. You then have to accept that in certain games during a season, you are short of a right full back. But we are still able to win. I fully believe in that way of working, by the way."
Defensive Reinforcements a Potential Priority
One area where Liverpool may still seek to do business is in central defence. The club were close to signing Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi last summer, only for the deal to collapse at a late stage.
The need has been exacerbated by injuries to summer signing Giovanni Leoni, who suffered an ACL injury, and Joe Gomez, who is currently sidelined. Slot admitted the situation is challenging.
"The injury of Giovanni has quite a lot of impact. If you have four centre backs for the season... but then you have an ACL injury, that is not very helpful. It is tough," he explained. "And unfortunately Joe is now out of the squad again tomorrow. In a season, these moments for most teams happen."
The January transfer window opens on 1 January 2026 and closes on Monday, 2 February. Liverpool have just over two weeks to finalise any plans before the market reopens. In the meantime, Slot will be focused on improving results in upcoming fixtures against Tottenham, Wolves, and Leeds United.
