Jonjo Shelvey has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 34 and immediately taken up his first managerial role with UAE second division side Arabian Falcons. The former Newcastle United midfielder ends a 17-year playing career that included spells at Charlton Athletic, Liverpool, Swansea City, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley, among others.
Shelvey, who earned six England caps, is best remembered for his seven-year stint at Newcastle, where he made 202 appearances and helped the club win the Championship title in 2017. His goal in a 1-0 win at Leeds United in 2022 proved pivotal in securing Premier League survival, which later enabled Newcastle to qualify for the Champions League.
The midfielder now succeeds Harry Agyombar as Arabian Falcons manager, with Agyombar stepping up to become sporting director. Shelvey inherits a squad that includes former Manchester United youngster Ravel Morrison, and his immediate task is to guide the club to promotion from the UAE third tier.
Speaking about his new role, Shelvey said: "I’m excited to take on this challenge and lead the Falcons forward. We have a talented group and a clear vision to achieve promotion and build something special in Dubai. My ambition is to climb to the very top of management." Arabian Falcons co-owner Jason Puncheon added that Shelvey's experience and character make him the perfect fit for the project.
