Alan Shearer Delivers Blistering Verdict on VAR Controversy
Former Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has unleashed a fierce criticism of the Video Assistant Referee system following a contentious incident involving Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhaes and Manchester City striker Erling Haaland. The clash occurred during Sunday's pivotal Premier League title showdown at the Etihad Stadium, where City secured a 2-1 victory over the Gunners.
Incident Sparks Heated Debate
As the match entered its final ten minutes, tensions flared between Haaland and Gabriel, with the Arsenal centre-back appearing to push his head towards the Norwegian forward. Referee Anthony Taylor issued yellow cards to both players after consulting with VAR, a decision that also led to City manager Pep Guardiola receiving a booking for his protests on the touchline.
Shearer expressed his disbelief at the outcome during an appearance on the Rest is Football podcast, drawing comparisons to a recent sending-off in another Premier League fixture. "The VAR sent the referee to the screen last week in the Manchester United game against Leeds for a tiny tug of the hair, and Lisandro Martinez was sent off for violent conduct," Shearer stated emphatically.
Clear Red Card Should Have Been Issued
"Yet you look at Gabriel, who shoved his head into Haaland's head - how on earth is that not a red card? Seriously, what is going on in our game with VAR?" Shearer continued, questioning the consistency of officiating standards. The former England captain suggested that VAR officials might have been reluctant to influence the title race significantly.
"My take on it is that they probably said, 'We don't really want to get involved in the title race, and we might not be seen sending someone else off.' I think Haaland has done Gabriel a favour by not going to the ground, because so many other players would have gone to the ground when he stuck his head into his. Clear red card it should have been," Shearer concluded.
Podcast Panel Weighs In on Controversy
Shearer was joined on the podcast by fellow pundits Gary Lineker and Micah Richards, with Lineker immediately agreeing with his colleague's assessment. "I agree, it was a red card," the former Everton and Barcelona striker stated without hesitation.
Richards offered a more nuanced perspective, acknowledging the match's significance while ultimately concurring with the red card verdict. "In fairness, in a game of this magnitude, I totally agree with you, and you both raise good points," Richards began. "But you don't want to see someone sent off for that. By the laws of the game, he should have been sent off, we all know that."
The former Manchester City defender elaborated on the referee's dilemma, saying, "Because there was so much back and forth, as a viewer and someone impartial watching the game, you don't want to see someone get sent off for that. However, I understand both of your points. It was just that it was back and forth, I totally understand why the referee has not given it. But by the laws, he should have been off, I agree."
Match Context and Title Implications
The incident occurred during a crucial period of a match that significantly impacted the Premier League title race. Haaland had scored the winning goal for City, with Rayan Cherki also finding the net for the home side. Arsenal's Kai Havertz had equalised in the first half after closing down Gianluigi Donnarumma's clearance.
The controversy has reignited debates about VAR consistency and its application in high-stakes matches, with Shearer's comments highlighting growing frustration among football pundits and fans alike regarding officiating standards in the Premier League.
