Legendary Spanish defender Sergio Ramos has made a decisive move in the January transfer window, rejecting an approach from French club Paris FC. The 39-year-old World Cup winner is currently a free agent after his short-term contract with Mexican side Monterrey concluded at the end of 2025.
European Return Preference Amid Paris Snub
According to reports from Foot Mercato, relayed by Get French Football News, the ambitious Ligue 1 outfit Paris FC had internally considered a move for the experienced centre-back. The club's owners, the Arnault family, were keen to add his winning mentality to their squad following promotion to France's top flight.
However, Ramos has no intention of joining the newly promoted side, despite their signings of players like former PSG goalkeeper Kevin Trapp. The defender previously enjoyed a successful two-year spell in the French capital with Paris Saint-Germain, securing consecutive Ligue 1 titles before his return to Sevilla.
Manchester United Links Firmly Played Down
Ramos had also been tentatively linked with a sensational late-career switch to the Premier League with Manchester United. Those rumours, however, have been swiftly and firmly dismissed by sources close to the Old Trafford club.
As reported by ESPN in December, the veteran does not fit the age profile of player that United are currently targeting in their recruitment strategy. This policy effectively rules out a move for the former Real Madrid captain, who will turn 40 in March.
The speculation revived memories of a much more serious approach from United back in 2015. Ramos himself addressed those past links in 2023, stating, "I was indeed close to playing for United. It was not to be, but I do keep that admiration for the club, to the Premier League." He ultimately remained at Real Madrid, where he won four Champions League trophies.
Nice Also Rule Out Move for Free Agent
Further potential destinations in Europe have also been closed off. OGC Nice, another club under the influence of Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe through INEOS, was another name mentioned in connection with Ramos.
Nice president Jean-Pierre Rivere categorically denied any interest, telling reporters, "Sergio Ramos is not on our radar, that’s not the case." He added that while the club is active in the January window, they are not looking to sign "big names" for the sake of it, focusing instead on consistent team building.
With moves to Paris FC, Manchester United, and Nice all ruled out, the future for the 180-cap Spain international remains uncertain. His preference for a return to European football is clear, but finding a club that matches his ambitions and fits his iconic status at this late stage of his career presents a significant challenge.
