Seedorf Backs Arsenal's Defensive Resilience for Champions League Success
Arsenal have received a significant vote of confidence from former AC Milan and Real Madrid midfielder Clarence Seedorf, who believes the Gunners' defensive strength could propel them to Champions League glory. Speaking on Amazon Prime Video after Paris Saint-Germain's thrilling 5-4 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their semi-final, Seedorf highlighted Arsenal's remarkable clean sheet record as a key factor.
"The clean sheet was always sacred for goalkeepers, and we have seen a team like Arsenal making the difference this year having so many clean sheets and coming all the way," Seedorf said. "So if I have to point out one team now that would be capable, actually, to bring it home because of that capacity, it is actually Arsenal."
The Gunners have conceded just once across four knockout stage matches, a testament to their defensive organisation under Mikel Arteta. However, they have managed only four goals in that same period, highlighting a potential vulnerability. Arsenal face Atletico Madrid in the semi-finals, with the Spanish side having evolved into a more attacking force under Diego Simeone, featuring the likes of Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julian Alvarez.
Both Lookman and Alvarez were injury doubts for the first leg, but Alvarez returned to the Atletico squad last weekend and confirmed his fitness. Lookman was spotted back in training after a several-week absence. Arteta has also received a double fitness boost, with Eberechi Eze and Riccardo Calafiori both expected to feature. Eze was substituted off against Newcastle United on Saturday, while Calafiori has been sidelined since the first leg victory over Sporting CP.
However, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz will be absent. Havertz appears to be nursing a minor knock, while Timber has been out since mid-March. When asked about Timber's recovery, Arteta said: "We don't know yet [if he will play again this season]. He's doing some stuff on the pitch at the moment. But we need to get the gears up and be able to do more things before he can come back to us."
Whoever progresses between PSG and Bayern Munich will likely enter the final as favourites given their attacking firepower, which was on full display in the 5-4 thriller. However, Seedorf's comments suggest that Arsenal's defensive discipline could be the deciding factor in a one-off final.
