Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes has publicly criticised the co-commentary of Arsenal legend Martin Keown, accusing him of bias during the Gunners' dramatic Premier League defeat.
Scholes' Social Media Jab Goes Viral
The incident occurred on Saturday during TNT Sports' coverage of Aston Villa's 2-1 victory over Mikel Arteta's Arsenal. Keown, a former defender who was part of Arsenal's iconic Invincibles team of 2003-04, was on commentary duty for the broadcast.
Following the match, Scholes took to social media to deliver a pointed comparison. "Listening to Keown on TNT is like listening to Paddy Crerand on MUTV," the United legend wrote. This was a clear reference to the famously partisan commentary style of Paddy Crerand, the former United player turned club TV channel presenter.
Fan Frustration and a Royal Rebuttal
Scholes' sentiment echoed that of many viewers who felt Keown's allegiance to his former club was overly apparent. The frustration reportedly peaked when Keown selected Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard as his man of the match late in the game.
This decision even drew a response from a very prominent Aston Villa supporter. Prince William, the Prince of Wales, used the official Kensington Royal account on X to voice his disagreement. "Surely Emi Buendia for man of the match, [TNT Sports]?! An incredible game! UTV! W," the future king posted.
Keown's On-Air Apology to Royalty
Keown addressed the royal intervention live on air, offering a humorous apology. "I'm really sorry that I've upset royalty, but I actually gave it out – can you believe it – in the 89th minute. I was a bit early," he said.
He then suggested a compromise, adding: "We can unofficially do it [give Buendia the MOTM award]. I don't want to be court-martialled." The light-hearted moment provided a comedic end to a controversy that highlighted the perennial debate around pundits' perceived biases in sports broadcasting.
