Australia opened their Women's Asian Cup campaign with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Philippines in front of a record crowd of 44,379 at Perth Stadium. The Matildas, showing signs of rustiness after assembling only a week ago, struggled to break down a disciplined Philippines defence but secured the win through a 13th-minute header from captain Sam Kerr.
The goal came from a deep cross by midfielder Clare Wheeler to Caitlin Foord at the back post, who headed down for the unmarked Kerr to power past Philippines goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel. The strike, in front of Kerr's home-town fans, was her last appearance before sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury that would keep her out of football for almost two years.
The attendance broke the record for the highest-attended match in Asian Cup history on the tournament's very first day. Kerr led the side out in Perth for the first time since November 2023, and her goal seemed to awaken the hosts, who registered 80% possession and five shots in the first half but failed to create clearer chances after the break.
Goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln earned a surprise start after third-choice Jada Whyman withdrew on the morning of the match, with Mackenzie Arnold still not fully recovered from a niggle. The 21-year-old made a comfortable early save from Sara Eggesvik's long-range attempt. Coach Joe Montemurro introduced Mary Fowler from the bench, recently returned from her own ACL injury, as a central attacking midfielder.
The Matildas face Iran in their next Group A match on Thursday on the Gold Coast.
