Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah has issued an apology to his teammates at Anfield following the fallout from a controversial interview in which he claimed the club had "thrown him under the bus".
Salah's Elland Road Outburst and Apology
The Egyptian star, who has now joined his national team for the Africa Cup of Nations, sparked a major storm with his public comments. He accused Liverpool of breaking promises, stated he had no relationship with manager Arne Slot, and cast significant doubt over his future at the club.
Midfielder Curtis Jones has now revealed that Salah expressed remorse directly to the playing squad. Jones told Sky Sports that Salah addressed the group, saying, "If I've affected anybody or made you feel any sort of way, I apologise". Jones described Salah as being his "usual self" with a big smile, indicating the squad had welcomed him back.
Fallout and Reintegration into the Squad
The immediate consequence of Salah's interview saw him omitted from the squad that travelled to face Inter Milan in Italy, a match for which Liverpool were already dealing with several injuries. The club stressed this was not a formal disciplinary action.
His reintegration began with a substitute appearance in last week's victory over Brighton & Hove Albion, before he departed for international duty. While manager Arne Slot has not disclosed whether he received a personal apology, Jones's confirmation highlights the resolution within the dressing room.
Teammate Understanding and Moving Forward
Curtis Jones showed understanding for Salah's frustration, attributing the outburst to the player's competitive nature after being left out of the starting lineup for three consecutive games. "I get that there are certain ways you can go about things," Jones said, "but if a lad's fine to just be on the bench and he doesn't want to play and help the team, then I think that's more of an issue."
He emphasised that any anger from players, including himself, always comes from a "good place" and a desire to win, even if it is not always expressed perfectly. Jones confirmed the squad is now past the incident, stating they are "gelling well as a team, playing well and starting to win games."
The episode, which dominated headlines in late December 2025, appears to be closed within the Liverpool camp as they focus on their season, with Salah's future set to be revisited after the Africa Cup of Nations.
