Roy Keane has criticised Manchester United's players for their role in Erik ten Hag's sacking, accusing them of lacking effort and desire. The Dutch manager was dismissed last Monday after a poor start to the season, with only four wins in all competitions.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Keane expressed sympathy for Ten Hag but placed the blame squarely on the squad. 'The players let him down by their efforts and not being good enough,' said the former United captain. He highlighted a lack of running and intensity, warning new manager Ruben Amorim of the mentality issues he will face.
Keane added: 'There are players in big positions who can't run, and others who don't want to run. When they do run, it's not hard enough, fast enough, or long enough.' He noted that moving on underperforming players would be difficult due to long-term contracts.
In his first statement since leaving, Ten Hag thanked fans and staff for their support, saying: 'The atmosphere at Old Trafford has always been electrifying.' He reflected on winning two trophies but admitted his dream of bringing more silverware had ended.
