Matt and Lizzy, a retired couple from Epsom, Surrey, appeared on the BBC show Escape to the Country in 2024 with hopes of relocating to Argyll and Bute. They had a budget of £600,000 and were seeking a detached home with space for Lizzy's creative hobbies and views of the Scottish coastline.
Love at first sight
During their first viewing on the Cowal Peninsula, they found a house that seemed perfect. The peaceful surroundings, rural charm, and impressive outlook immediately won them over. Matt called the house "amazing," while Lizzy admired the roofline and archway. They were so convinced that Matt joked they were ready to buy it.
Presenter Nicki Chapman agreed the property was ideally suited, noting the serene environment and birdsong. The asking price was £399,000, well within their budget, and the couple made an offer that was accepted.
A devastating turn
Their joy was short-lived. The sale unexpectedly fell through when the seller pulled out, leaving the couple devastated. They were back to square one, forced to continue their search for a new home in Scotland.
