Manchester United's summer transfer business is far from complete, but a new twist could hinder their plans. Barcelona's surprise interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri may have major consequences for United's ambitions.
Rodri's potential move to Barcelona
Real Madrid had been seen as the frontrunners to sign the Spain international, whose contract at the Etihad has less than 12 months remaining. Jose Mourinho's side were reportedly ready to pay over £60 million for Rodri, and his departure to Real Madrid would have been ideal for United.
If Rodri had joined Real Madrid, it could have pushed key target Aurelien Tchouameni towards the exit, as Los Blancos would need to free up midfield space and generate funds. But if Barcelona beat Real Madrid to Rodri, they would have little reason to sell Tchouameni, severely denting United's hopes of a late midfield addition.
Marcus Rashford's contract clause
United's efforts to resolve Rashford's situation have become more urgent after details of his contract clause emerged. The 28-year-old earns around £300,000 per week, with his wages set to rise after United qualified for the Champions League.
Before Sir Jim Ratcliffe's financial reforms, United players had a clause guaranteeing a 25 per cent salary increase upon Champions League qualification. That arrangement was scrapped in 2024, but players who signed earlier deals, including Rashford and Mason Mount, still have the right to the boost.
