Roy Hodgson has made a shock return to football management at the age of 78, being appointed interim head coach of Championship side Bristol City. The former England manager, who turns 79 in August, replaces Gerhard Struber, who was sacked after a 1-0 home defeat to West Brom.
This is Hodgson's first job since leaving Crystal Palace in February 2024. He previously had a brief, unsuccessful four-month stint as Bristol City manager in 1982. Since then, he has held 22 managerial positions over a 50-year career.
Bristol City CEO Charlie Boss said: 'Roy’s appointment is about more than the results of the next seven games. Over the remainder of the season he will help us set the standards and values at the club that we will need to be successful going forwards.'
Hodgson takes over a side 16th in the Championship, 12 points above the relegation zone and 12 points from the play-offs, with seven matches remaining. They are winless in eight games. His first match in charge is away to Charlton on Good Friday.
'I have had great conversations with the Board and I am really excited by the opportunity to help until the end of the season,' Hodgson said. 'We will get straight to work and look for a positive performance on Good Friday.'
