Chelsea's search for a new head coach has accelerated, with Liam Rosenior flying into London on Sunday for decisive talks. The move comes as the Blues secured a thrilling last-gasp draw against Manchester City under the guidance of a surprise interim boss.
Caretaker Steals the Show at the Etihad
While Rosenior was en route to the capital, Chelsea were battling to a memorable 1-1 draw away at the Premier League champions. The side was temporarily led by Under-21 head coach Calum McFarlane, who, at 37, had never managed a senior match before.
McFarlane's tactical setup successfully thwarted Pep Guardiola's City, despite Chelsea losing goalkeeper Robert Sanchez and defender Wesley Fofana to injury and illness before the game. The special result was sealed deep into stoppage time by a goal from midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Rosenior Poised for Swift Appointment
The 41-year-old Englishman, formerly of Hull City, is now the frontrunner to replace the departed Enzo Maresca. Further talks are scheduled, with a possibility that Rosenior could be installed in time for Chelsea's next Premier League fixture against Fulham on Wednesday.
His current club, French side Strasbourg – who are part of the Chelsea multi-club network – are already working to secure a replacement after their 1-1 draw with Nice on Saturday.
What Comes Next for Chelsea?
McFarlane, who took the reins last Thursday, acknowledged the temporary nature of his role. "There's a chance that the new manager will be in on Monday," he stated after the City match. The club now moves swiftly to finalise Rosenior's appointment, aiming for stability ahead of a busy period.
This potential move marks a significant step for Rosenior's career and begins a new chapter for Chelsea as they look to build on a resilient performance against the league's best.
