Premier League Referee Craig Pawson Banned from Sheffield United and Wednesday Matches
One of the Premier League's most seasoned referees, Craig Pawson, has been appointed to officiate the highly anticipated clash between Arsenal and Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium this Sunday. However, the experienced official is permanently barred from taking charge of matches involving two specific clubs due to strict regulations on declared allegiances.
Experienced Official Takes Charge of High-Profile Fixture
Craig Pawson, a 46-year-old referee with extensive Premier League experience dating back to 2013, will be the man in the middle for this crucial encounter between two historic rivals. Pawson's career includes officiating a Championship play-off final, an FA Cup semi-final, and matches in both the Champions League and Europa League, demonstrating his credentials for handling high-pressure situations.
PGMOL Rules Prevent Conflict of Interest
The Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) requires all referees to disclose which football clubs they support and any potential conflicts of interest. Under these regulations, referees cannot be assigned to matches involving the team they support or their close local rivals. As a Sheffield-born official and self-confessed Sheffield United supporter, Pawson is therefore permanently excluded from officiating matches involving the Blades or their city rivals Sheffield Wednesday.
These transparency measures were strengthened from the 2024/25 season following complaints about potential conflicts of interest. The rules apply not only to the main referee but also to assistant referees and VAR officials. The declaration process even extends to immediate family members' allegiances, particularly those living in the same household.
Current Form of Pawson's Supported Clubs
Sheffield United's last Premier League campaign ended in relegation during the 2023/24 season with just 16 points, and they currently sit 17th in the Championship. Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday face relegation to League One after being hit with multiple points deductions amid well-documented financial difficulties.
Pawson's Recent Performance Statistics
This season, Pawson has taken charge of 15 matches across three competitions: 12 Premier League games, two Carabao Cup fixtures, and one Championship match. His disciplinary record shows 36 yellow cards issued, averaging 2.4 per game, with just two red cards distributed.
His most recent Arsenal assignment was the 2-2 draw at Sunderland in November, while his last Manchester United fixture as referee was their 3-1 defeat at Brentford in September. Notably, Pawson served as VAR official for United's derby victory over Manchester City last weekend, where he controversially supported referee Anthony Taylor's decision to only book Diogo Dalot for a high challenge on Jeremy Doku.
Team News for the Emirates Clash
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta receives a significant boost with defenders Riccardo Calafiori and Piero Hincapie both returning from injury. Calafiori has missed the past eight matches, while Hincapie hasn't featured since Arsenal's goalless draw with Liverpool on January 8th.
For Manchester United, defender Matthijs de Ligt remains sidelined through injury. However, Noussair Mazraoui returns from international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, and young talent Shea Lacey is available again following suspension.
The implementation of these transparency rules represents a significant step toward maintaining integrity in Premier League officiating, ensuring that even experienced referees like Pawson avoid any perception of bias when taking charge of crucial matches.
